A Few Concussion Facts

  • 70% of concussions heal within one month.

  • 30% turn into Persistent Concussion Symptoms (PCS) (poor us!).

Women suffer more symptoms, more severely, and take longer to recover than men.

Early treatment curbs PCS.  Get to your doctor IMMEDIATELY and demand care by providers with concussion-specific training.

There are many treatments for concussion:
  • Physical therapy for whiplash and neck issues (100% of concussion survivors have whiplash!)
  • Vestibular therapy for balance, dizziness, and body awareness in space
  • Speech therapy (cognitive rehab) for memory, concentration and language problems.
  • Eye therapy for eye-tracking problems, inability to read (I couldn't for 2 years!)
  • And many more.

A Few Concussion Resources

1. Get to your doctor ASAP for an evaulation. If she tells you to rest in a dark room and wait it out -- get a new concussion-trained doctor NOW.

2. If you are not back to normal within one month, return to the doctor and demand care by professionals with concussion-specific training.

3.  Google "Concussion Clinic near me" to locate one-stop-shopping concussion clinics

4.  Can't find care?   Concussion Legacy Foundation offers a free concussion care-finding service by email.

5.  Instagram has amazing, current information and support. Follow #concussionrecovery for professionals and fellow PCS warriors in community and active dialogue.

6.  Get a mentor.  I mentor women through Concussion Legacy Foundation.  We meet 2x per month for 6 months. It helps to have a friend in this lonely journey.

7..  Join a support group.   Your state's Brain Injury Association will likely offer online Concussion and PCS Support Groups. This is meaningful and healing and so important to have Concussion Buddies.

8.  Don't suffer alone, at home, in silence.  Get help.

9.  Ask me for a piece of Art!  It's my pleasure to connect with you and send you a bright and cheerful piece of art in the mail.
