10 Things To Do If You Have A Concussion
1. Get to your doctor ASAP for an evaulation. If she tells you to rest in a dark room and wait it out -- get a new concussion-trained doctor NOW.
2. Demand concussion-trained providers. If you are not back to normal within one month, return to the doctor and demand care by professionals with concussion-specific training.
3. Google "Concussion Clinic near me" to locate one-stop-shopping concussion clinics
4. Get help finding care. Concussion Legacy Foundation offers a free concussion care-finding service by email.
5. Join Instagram. Instagram has amazing, current information and support. Follow #concussionrecovery for professionals and fellow PCS warriors in community and active dialogue. Follow me @concussion_recovery_art
6. Get a mentor. I mentor women through Concussion Legacy Foundation. We meet for 6 months. It helps to have a friend in this lonely journey.
7. Join a support group. CLF offers 6 (including Concussed Moms, which I facilitate.) Your state's Brain Injury Association will offer onlineGroups. This is meaningful and healing and so important to have Concussion Buddies.
8. Get your spouse/caregiver in a support group. If your caregiver is informed on treatments to try, your healing will go much faster. You can't do it -- you have a brain injury! This is ESSENTIAL. CLF offers a Caregiver Support Group.
9. Don't suffer alone, at home, in silence. Get help. Time does not heal concussions.
10. Know you will get better. With proper treatment, you will! Treatment is essential!
